Catchment, Agricultural and Freshwater Ecology Lab
We study how land use shapes rivers, wetlands and coasts, and how farms can be managed to produce food while restoring the ecosystems around them.
What we work on
Our work follows water downhill from the paddock to the river, and traces river health back to the land that shapes it.
- Farms and agroecologyRegenerative practices, soil health, natural capital and wild foods, linking what happens in the paddock to the health of the wider landscape.
- Wetlands and landscape ecologyHow floodplains, wetlands and coastal mangroves filter water, support biodiversity and recover after disturbance.
- Water quality targets and catchment loadsTracing where nutrient, sediment and pesticide loads come from, and setting criteria that protect aquatic life.
- Freshwater ecosystem healthAssessing the condition of rivers and streams through their food webs, fish, invertebrates and threatened species, using field surveys, eDNA and modelling.
